The road, dubbed the “Infinity Highway,” is opening three months early and on budget, Gov Brian Sandoval said. A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the project just 14 months ago.

The four-lane USA Parkway extension is set to open by Sept. 8. With a $75.9 million price tag, the project will expand the current six-mile road an additional 12 miles, connecting the Silver Springs area to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.

The Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRI), located at the northern terminus of the road, houses major industrial and technology companies including Tesla, Google, Switch and Chewy. There are 150 companies at the industrial center, said Lance Gilman, a development partner for TRI and the center’s director of marketing, and plans are in the works for a town center that will feature educational facilities, clubs, banks, bike trails, water features “and all forms of retail.”

Gilman declined to name names, but did say that a nanotechnology company purchased 1,100 acres at the industrial site the morning of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Lyon County is sitting in the most incredible path of development in the United States today,” Gilman said.

“Now the people that live in Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Carson City and Yerington will have access to high-quality jobs,” Sandoval told the crowd of several hundred who gathered adjacent to the parkway at the Lyon and Storey county line. “This is a landmark day for all of us.”

Construction of the project required excavation of two million cubic yards of dirt, used more than 500,000-square-yards of asphalt and installed approximately 91 miles of fiber optic conduit. In addition, around 200,000 man-hours went into the project.

The parkway, officially State Route 439, is expected to reduce travel time for those driving between Highway 50 and Interstate 80 by nearly 40 percent.
